In a couple months, a new Democratic National Committee Chair will be elected. But before that — on December 3 — the Michigan Democratic State Central Committee will elect seven people to represent the Great Lakes State on the DNC for the next four years. These DNC members will elect the new Chair and officers, implement reforms to our Presidential nominating process, and work to prepare our Party for victory in 2018 and 2020.
Today, I am pleased to announce that I am running to be one of Michigan’s DNC members.
What I will bring to the DNC?
- Low-income background. The Democratic National Committee has a serious shortage of low-income and working-class members — whose votes we will desperately need in future elections.
- Youth. Nearly 40% of Hillary voters in Michigan were under 40, according to CNN’s exit poll — yet only one DNC member from Michigan is under 44 (and she will be leaving the DNC next year). As a 29-year-old, I have a vested interest in making sure our Party is responsive to those of us who will live with the impact of policymakers’ actions for many decades.
- The perspective of a gay Democrat. The problems facing the LGBT community are worse in Michigan than in many other states — yet Michigan is completely shut out of the DNC LGBT Caucus. I am ready to stand up for Michigan’s LGBT community.
- West Michigan residency. Increasingly, the road to victory runs through places like Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Kalamazoo. Only one of our DNC members is from this part of the state.
- National-level experience. I have served as Deputy Communications Director for the College Democrats of America and as a member of the Young Democrats of America National Committee. In addition, I worked on the acclaimed digital team at Organizing for Action.
- Leadership in Michigan. As chair of the 2nd Congressional District Democrats, I have helped raise more than $30,000 for Democratic candidates and county parties. I also serve on State Central and the Justice Caucus board.
- Volunteer experience dating back to 2004. I have canvassed thousands of doors, made hundreds of calls, registered many voters, and entered bundles of data for countless campaigns for President, City Commission, and everything in between. I understand what our candidates need — and I am ready to help make the DNC responsive to them.
