The Michigan Democratic State Central Committee today elected six Democrats to represent the Great Lakes State on the Democratic National Committee — and at least one of them has publicly pledged to back Keith Ellison.
Michelle Deatrick, who helped run Bernie Sanders’s Michigan campaign, was one of three women and three men who will serve on the DNC for a term that expires in 2020.
Other DNC members elected today include:
- Norwood Jewell — UAW Vice President
- Daryl Newman — Michigan AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer
- Barry Goodman — Attorney
- Shauna Ryder Diggs, M.D. — Doctor and University of Michigan Regent
- Gretchen Dziadosz — Michigan Education Association Executive Director
Jewell, Goodman, and Ryder Diggs were re-elected as incumbents. Jill Alper, Rep. Debbie Dingell, Steve Cook, and Al Garrett are retiring from the DNC. Michigan lost one DNC seat this cycle versus the previous cycle.
The February 11 State Convention, held two weeks before the DNC meeting, will see the election of a State Chair and two Vice Chairs. Each state’s Chair, along with the highest-ranking Vice Chair of different gender from the Chair, automatically serve on the DNC.
